The Zonazione
The “Doc Piave Zoning”
The project of viticultural and oenological zoning of the Doc Piave area started in 2007 with the aim to monitor 120 representative vineyards of this area, in order to include all the different microclimatic and environmental conditions that this huge area presents.
It has been possible to identify many sub-areas that differ from each other for the various combinations of soil type (clayey, calcareous, gravelly etc.), culture method, location (plain, hillside, etc.) and sun exposure.
The grapevines involved in this project, promoted by Veneto Agricoltura, Veneto region and the Experimental Institute for Viticulture of Conegliano, are: Prosecco, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Carmenere, Raboso Piave, Verduzzo Trevigiano and Manzoni Bianco.
The experimentation aims in particular to analyze the response of Manzoni Bianco in different terroirs, its cultivation and oenological reaction and the study of the most suitable conditions for this native variety such as water management, pruning, plant spacing, fertilization, ect.
The zoning is not limited to the viticultural and oenological aspects but it takes part of a larger project of protection and promotion of the culture and the history of the vine in the Doc Piave area, identifying the elements of the territory that may tighten the link with the typical identity of the area.
